OPOMUN is back in session for three days of debate on Artificial Intelligence and much more.
From February 12th to 14th, 2025, the Oporto Model United Nations (OPOMUN) will return for its 18th edition, bringing together nearly 400 students from 18 schools across six countries. Hosted by CLIP — Oporto International School, OPOMUN continues its tradition of cultivating diplomacy, public speaking, and leadership skills among young participants by simulating the workings of the United Nations.
The conference will begin at CLIP — Oporto International School on February 12th and continue at Porto Palácio Hotel on February 13th and 14th.
This year, OPOMUN welcomes António Martins da Cruz, a distinguished diplomat and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, as its Guest Speaker during the Opening Ceremony. With an illustrious career that includes diplomatic posts in Mozambique, Egypt, and the United Nations and key roles in NATO and the European Union, his address promises to inspire participants with valuable insights into international relations and global policymaking.
A key focus of this year's discussions will be the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence (AI). Topics will explore AI's implications for global governance, ethics, economic development, and security. Delegates will examine how AI shapes the world and consider innovative solutions to balance technological advancement with ethical responsibility. This year's program includes discussions within two new committees, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Disarmament and International Security (DISEC), addressing emerging and complex global issues. Delegates will collaborate, negotiate, and draft resolutions on "Regulating Autonomous and AI-Driven Weapons in Modern Warfare" and "Addressing the Digital Divide: Combating Technological Inequality in an Increasingly Connected World".
Reflecting on the conference's growth and impact, Marta Costa (F12), OPOMUN's Secretary-General, shared her thoughts:
Having been involved with Model United Nations since 2021, this marks my 12th conference, and I am immensely proud of what we've achieved. OPOMUN has been a life-changing experience for so many students, including myself, as it provides an unparalleled platform to learn, connect, and grow. Watching participants evolve into confident leaders and thoughtful global citizens is the most rewarding part of this journey.
The 2025 edition will showcase a truly international presence, with delegations from schools in Portugal, Sweden, the United States, Spain, Austria, and Italy, including new additions such as Stockholm International School, LaSalle College High School, and Vienna International School. Portuguese institutions such as Colégio Novo da Maia, Colégio São João de Brito, and Aprendizes Active Learning School will also join the debate.
The conference will also celebrate Portugal's rich cultural heritage through a Cultural Evening on the first day, allowing participants to experience Portuguese traditions, cuisine, and music. Adding to the program, a Social Event at Alfândega do Porto on February 13th will highlight the city's unique charm and hospitality, offering delegates and chaperones a memorable evening in one of Europe's most iconic destinations, promising a unique and unforgettable experience.
OPOMUN 2025 is proud to be supported by Câmara Municipal do Porto through its "Study in Porto" initiative and the Division of Youth. The event also benefits from the collaboration of Caetano Baviera, the conference's official Mobility Partner, ensuring seamless logistics for participants.
